With a high street full of independent shops, cafes and restaurants, two fantastic golf courses and great transport links to the bustling city centre of Edinburgh, it’s no wonder this pretty seaside town is one of the most desirable places to live in the country.

Transport

The seaside town benefits from excellent transport links, with a regular train service to Edinburgh city centre taking just 30 minutes. There is also a regular bus service between North Berwick and Edinburgh.

Activities and events

North Berwick is a golf lover's paradise, with two superb golf courses: the world-renowned West Links and the East Links (the Glen) which offers spectacular views. For junior players, there's also a nine-hole kid's course. Plus, there are lots of other excellent golf courses situated a short drive from the town, including Muirfield and Gullane.
North Berwick is also home to Bass Rock, which is the largest Northern gannet colony in the world is located – it won BBC Countryfile's Nature Reserve of the Year 2016. You can find out more about it and some of the other amazing local wildlife at the Scottish Seabird Centre, located right on the beach and close to the high street.
The coastal town is also home to several events and festivals throughout the year, including the Fringe by the Sea. While one of the biggest performing arts festivals in the world is on in Edinburgh during August, North Berwick hosts a shorter and smaller seaside version, featuring a great selection of music, comedy, literature, film and more.

Shopping, eating and drinking

The high street of North Berwick is dotted with an array of lovely independent shops, featuring one-of-a-kind gifts, making it a perfect place to wander in the afternoons. It’s made even better by the plethora of cute cafes and coffee shops, most notably the trendy hangout Steampunk, located just off the high street, which serves up great coffee and a lovely selection of food.

There is also a great range of restaurants in the town. Highlights include Osteria, an award-winning Italian restaurant, and Poonthai’s, which offers authentic Thai cuisine. North Berwick also has several bars for post-work drinks or a casual bite-to-eat. The Herringbone offers a varied selection of wines and craft beers, as well as sharing boards and other tasty dishes. Further out of the centre, the Nether Abbey provides a lovely choice of drinks and food in a relaxed setting.
